Following Bangkok’s violence, the Thai travel industry has been prompt to look at ways to revive tourism, involving members of the government at the highest level. Thailand tourism, which accounts for 7 to 12 percent of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) – numbers vary if indirect employment is included - saw total arrivals plunging in April and May by up to 40 percent, according to sources at the Ministry of Sports and Tourism.
A good example about the influence of direct international flights is provided by Phuket: as Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport saw passengers number falling by 20 percent, the southern resort destination experienced by contrary a rise in international air arrivals by over 40 percent since the beginning of the year and even by 61 percent in May.
